A Child's Prayer

It was a few days after Christmas. Bonnie was just getting back from the long weekend of celebration with her family. They had a wonderful time together and after all the gifts were put away Bonnie got the girls ready for bed. As she began to tuck them in, her daughter Kayla started to cry. She told her mommy that she wanted a daddy. She told her that she would be willing to give back every Christmas gift in exchange for a daddy. Together they prayed as Bonnie held back the tears. This was the desire of her heart too. She wanted a husband and a father for her children. Life has been tough these last nine years of being a single mom and although she has done a wonderful job she knows how much easier it would be to have that special someone there to help her every day and to love her and the girls.

When Bonnie shared this with me my heart started to cry out in prayer with them. I know the long road they have walked and the comments made by others who don't understand her situation. For days this child's cry and prayer stayed on my heart. I could only imagine how heavy Kayla's heart was to be so willing to give up everything she had just received for one desire of her heart, a daddy. Kayla and Johanna have been taught by their mom to have faith in God. She has raised them to know the One who died for them and when they pray they believe in their heart that the Lord will answer them.

A few days later I was riding in my car and thinking about Bonnie and the girls. I thought about Kayla saying she was willing to give up her gifts if she could just have a daddy. The more I thought about it the more my heart turned toward Our Father and His willingness to give up His only Son that we might have life, eternal life in Him. I realized that Kayla didn't have to give everything back to have her prayer answered because Our Father already gave us everything when He gave His Son Jesus Christ to us. He died on the cross that we might have life not only eternal life but a life on this earth that reflects His goodness in us. He died that we might have total peace and wholeness in our lives.

I believe it is His desire for Kayla and Johanna to have a daddy and I am sure He has a perfect plan to bring nothing less than His best into their lives. He loves them that much. Our Father held nothing back from us. He sent His very best and although it meant suffering and pain and watching His Son be rejected by many He was still willing because you and I meant so much to Him. He longed to be in relationship with us and He was willing to pay the price no matter what the cost. He gave the perfect sacrifice. His Son who knew no sin became sin for us and because of His payment on the cross we now have access to the throne room of grace in the name of Jesus. As much as Kayla was crying out for a daddy, God was crying out for His children to turn to Him. All He wanted was a family that loved Him as much as He loved them. We can praise Him and love Him and be assured of His love for us. We can trust in His Word that says,

"cast all your cares upon Him for He cares for you."(1 Peter 5:7)

Kayla did this. She gave her care to the Lord knowing that He cares enough about her and her sister and her mom to answer her prayer. They have learned and believe that

"He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?" (Romans 8:32)

I believe we will see this child's prayer answered and I am asking you to pray for them and also for all the children in this world who are crying out for a mom or dad to love them. I know that Kayla's prayer touched my heart and I hope it will touch yours to know the love of Our Father.
